Studies have shown that vegetarians absorb and retain more calcium from foods than do non-vegetarians. Vegetable greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli, and some legumes and soybean products are good sources of calcium. People consuming dairy products excrete more calcium than they ingest because the animal protein break down into types of amino acids which leach calcium from the body. This worsens conditions like osteoporosis. American women have been consuming an average of two pounds of milk per day for their entire lives, yet thirty million American women have osteoporosis. Drinking milk does not prevent bone loss. The most effective way to strengthen bones is exercise. Taking drugs or supplements are no more effective in strengthening bones than strengthening muscles. If you want to strengthen muscles, do weight bearing exercise. The same thing applies if you want to strengthen bones, do weight bearing exercise.
